About ASKme
Student Life, in partnership with Human Resources & Equity, is pleased once again to launch the ASKme program on the St. George campus for fall 2011. Introduced in 2008, the program is one more way to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for new students arriving on the St. George campus this September. This year the program will run from September 6 to 16.
Staff and faculty who would like to participate are encouraged to print a customized name badge and wear it while walking around the campus, identifying themselves as someone students may approach with questions. A helpful information package is also available for download, covering a number of questions frequently asked by our new students. Thank you for your continued support of the ASKme program.

Where can I get a TCard?The TCard is a student’s U of T photo ID. It’s used for academic purposes, facility access, student activities and services. It’s also a library card and a smartcard, so students can carry cash on it and use it to purchase photocopies, computer printing, laundry services and vending services at locations across the campus. Students can pick up their TCard in Room 2054A on the second floor of Robarts Library, 130 St. George St.
Where can I get a UHIP card?
UHIP is a health insurance plan that gives international students coverage that’s similar to OHIP. Students should go to the UHIP Office in the Koffler Student Services Centre, 214 College St., Rm. 202, with any questions regarding UHIP.
Where can I get a locker?
Arts & Science students can rent a locker by going to the Arts & Science Students’ Union, located on the main floor of Sidney Smith Hall, 100 St. George St. Engineering students can visit the U of T Engineering Society in the basement of the Sandford Fleming Building, 10 King’s College Rd. Lockers are available at the Athletic Centre, 55 Harbord St., for $50. Students may check with their registrar about lockers.
Where can I get a parking pass?
Students can obtain a parking pass online or in person at the Parking Services office, 1 Spadina Cres., Rm. 105. Students can also go to Hart House (7 Hart House Circle) for passes.
Where is the closest drug store?
If you are on the west side of the campus, the closest drug store is a 24-hour Shoppers Drug Mart, on Bloor St. W., just west of Spadina Ave., on the north side. If you are on the east side of the campus the closest drug store is in the Manulife Centre at 55 Bloor St. W., on the concourse level there is a Pharma Plus. If you are on the southeast side of campus the closest drug store is Rexall at Bay St. and College St. If you are on the southwest side of campus, the closest drug store is the Medical Pharmacy at 340 College St., across from Augusta Ave.
Where is the closest grocery store?
If you are on the west side of the campus the closest grocery store is Metro, on Bloor St. W., just west of Spadina Ave., on the south side of the street. If you are on the east side of the campus the closest grocery store is in the Manulife Centre at 55 Bloor St. W., on the concourse level there is a Bloor St. Market, a Loblaw subsidiary. The most fun place to shop for food is Kensington Market, which is off Spadina Ave., west along Baldwin St., south of College St., or Chinatown which is on Spadina Ave. a little further south, all around Dundas St.. Inexpensive and fun, Kensington Market and Chinatown are highly recommended.

Undergraduate students can pick up a free agenda from the University of Toronto Students’ Union, 12 Hart House Circle. Graduate students can go to the Graduate Students’ Union, 16 Bancroft Ave.
Where can I get an Anti-Calendar?
The Anti-Calendar compiles information from evaluations that students fill out at the end of a course. It is published by the Arts & Science Students’ Union, and can be picked up at their office on the main floor of Sidney Smith Hall, 100 St. George St.
Where can I get a campus map?
The new interactive and mobile-friendly map of the St. George campus can be found at map.utoronto.ca. There is a printable map.
Program & Service Information
How do I find out about Orientation?Orientation activities are usually organized by college or faculty student unions. From Sept. 6 to 9, it is probably best to send students to their college or faculty, where most orientation events will be happening. On Sept. 7, the University of Toronto Students’ Union (USTU) will host a university-wide orientation clubs day fair on Hart House Circle. On Sept. 9, the UTSU will host a university-wide parade and concert. There is also the Kickstart program for students who may not wish to attend traditional orientation activities, or who wish to attend other events as well as their college/faculty orientation. Kickstart events run throughout the first week of classes as well. Visit www.kickstart.utoronto.ca for information about Kickstart and visit start.utoronto.ca for full information on Orientation programming.
Where can I go if I am having problems and need to talk to someone?
Orientation is a huge transition for many students and, as a result, may be overwhelming. Students may need to be referred to services such as Counselling and Psychological Services, located on the main floor of the Koffler Student Services Centre, 214 College St. The University’s Equity Offices are also excellent resources for a variety of issues.
Can I get a tour of the campus?
During Orientation, colleges and faculties typically have campus tours as a part of their programming schedule. Tour of the campus are offered all year round by the Nona Macdonald Visitors Centre, located at 25 King’s College Circle. Tours depart Monday through Friday at 11:00am and 2:00pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00am (holiday weekends excluded).
How do I find out about what’s happening on campus?
Students will find valuable information (and develop important social connections) during their orientation. For more detailed information on what’s going on around the campus, students can consult two key websites: Ulife and the U of T Events Calendar. Important hubs of campus activity include Hart House, 7 Hart House Circle; the Centre for International Experience, 33 St. George St.; the Athletic Centre, 55 Harbord St.; the Sussex Clubhouse, 21 Sussex Ave.; the Multi-Faith Centre, 569 Spadina Ave.; and the Grad Room, 60 Harbord St.
How can I opt out of my student health insurance plan?

How do I get a job on campus?
A student’s first stop in looking for work on campus should be the Career Centre, located on the main floor of the Koffler Student Services Centre, 214 College Street.
Where can I go to the gym?
There are three athletic facilities on campus available to students with a valid TCard:
The Athletic Centre - Spadina Ave. and Harbord St., 55 Harbord Street - swimming, indoor track, racquet sports, weights and more.
Varsity Centre - Devonshire Place and Bloor St. W. – 5000-seat stadium with track and playing field. There is an ice rink at Varsity Arena, right next door.
Hart House - 7 Hart House Circle - pool, indoor track, squash courts, a dance studio, a gymnasium and weight equipment.
Where can I go for quiet study?
Popular locations for quiet study include Robarts Library, the Gerstein Science Information Centre, and Sidney Smith Hall. Centrally located, Hart House also has a library and reading room for quiet study. The colleges also tend to have their own libraries, reading rooms and study spaces.
Where can I find a quiet space to pray?
Students can find quiet spaces to pray in Bahen (around the corner from Mega Bites), the Hart House chapel (7 Hart House Circle), the Meditation Room in the Multi-Faith Centre (569 Spadina Ave.) and the Sussex Clubhouse Multi-Faith Room (21 Sussex Ave., 5th floor).
How can I find out about volunteer opportunities?
The Career Centre has an extensive listing of volunteer opportunities. Alternatively, if you are looking for a more immersive experience, the Centre for Community Partnership's Serve & Learn Program offers students community service placements and education around service learning. Finally, there are a number of interesting opportunities that appear on Ulife.
What is the UTSU? Where is the UTSU?
UTSU coordinates events and campaigns for undergraduate students at U of T. They also provide a number of services to students such as discounted TTC Metropasses, used Book Exchange, Health and Dental Plans, and discounted entertainment tickets and passes (i.e. movies, comedy clubs and Canada's Wonderland). The UTSU Office is located at 12 Hart House Circle (middle of the circle, across from Hart House and UC).
How can I get notified about emergencies on campus?
If an emergency or crisis occurs on campus, the University has an Emergency Alerts system that sends an automated voice call or text message with important information and further instructions. To receive these alerts, students need to register their cell phone number at alert.utoronto.ca/callme.

Where can I get a copy of the timetable?Faculty calendars, registration handbooks and timetables are available at the student’s registrar’s office. They are also available on the faculty’s website.
Who can I talk to about academic concerns?
Your registrar is a good place to discuss your academic concerns. You can also go to the Academic Success Centre for consultations; it is located on the main floor of the Koffler Student Services Centre, 214 College St.
Where is my registrar's office?
Every undergraduate faculty and college on campus has its own registrar’s office, where students can get help with registration, financial aid, personal issues, etc. In Arts & Sciences, students belong to one of seven colleges, each of which has its own registrar. Registration issues for graduate students can be referred to the student’s individual department, or the School of Graduate Studies. Please take note that registrar’s offices are open at differing hours and many close for an hour at lunchtime.

How do I check which classes I’m enrolled in?
ROSI (the Repository of Student Information) is the student’s online registration centre. Students having problems with any of their courses should contact their registrar.
What is ROSI? “Where” is ROSI?
The Repository of Student Information (ROSI) is U of T’s student online information system. This is where students can sign up for courses, update personal information and access grades.
Travel & Transportation
How do I get a discounted TTC Metropass?Post-Secondary TTC Metropasses are available from the University of Toronto Students' Union, 12 Hart House Circle, during the last five business days of every month at a cost of $99. Students who wish to purchase these discounted transit passes must also have a Post-Secondary TTC Student Photo ID, which are available at select on-campus locations at the beginning of the fall term and throughout the year at the Sherbourne subway station; a valid TCard is required.
How do I use the UTM Shuttle Bus?
The St. George stop of the UTM Shuttle Bus is in front of Hart House, 7 Hart House Circle. Tickets and information are available on the St. George campus at The HUB in Hart House, and at the University of Toronto Mississauga from the Info Booth in the Student Centre. Passes for the UTM Shuttle Bus can be purchased in Rm. 3093J of the South Building.
How do I get to UTSC?
University of Toronto Scarborough is located at 1265 Military Trail and the best way to get there if you are driving is to get directions from Google Maps from where you are to that address. For public transit, there are several routes, again depending where you are coming from. If you are taking the Yonge subway line, exit at York Mills station and take bus 95/95B/95E/95F. If you have taken the Bloor line east, transfer to the LRT at the end of the line and then get off at the Scarborough Town Centre stop. Once you are there, take bus 38. If this sounds confusing, ask a TTC station attendant or bus driver.
Where can I find the TTC? What about a TTC schedule?
The St. George campus is surrounded by TTC subway stops, bus routes and streetcar lines. Depending on where you are, you have a number of options. If you are on the west side of the campus, the St. George or Spadina subway stops will get you north, south, east and west. If you are on the east side of campus, the Museum and Queen's Park subway stops will get you north and south (going north will get you to a east-west transfer point). The 5 Avenue Road bus stops in front of the ROM, the 94 Wellesley bus stops in front of the Athletic Centre and across the street from Robarts Library, and streetcars run along College St. on the south end of the campus. Schedules are available from the TTC website. Connecting route schedules are also posted in subway stations and on most major street stops.
How do I get a discounted GO Transit pass?
GO Transit offers discounts to full-time university students. Application forms are available at college and faculty registrars’ offices for undergraduate students and at the School of Graduate Studies for graduate students.
Money & Fees
Where do I pick up OSAP documents? Where do I process OSAP documents?Students receiving OSAP assistance must visit their registrar’s office to pick up their documents. Students should be sure to first check their OSAP status online to make sure their documents are ready. They will need to bring three pieces of identification – a government issued photo ID, U of T student card and SIN card – as well as a void cheque. For a limited time, some registrar’s offices will have people present who can help students process their documents. Otherwise, students will have to process their documents at a designated Canada Post outlet, one of which can be found at the U of T Bookstore on the main floor of the Koffler Student Services Centre, 214 College St.
Where do I pay my fees?
Student fees must be paid at a bank, either in person or through online banking.
How do I request a fee deferral?
Requesting a fee deferral should be done as early as possible. Undergraduate students should visit their registrar’s office. Graduate students at OISE, Rotman and Dentistry should visit their own registrars, and all other graduate students should consult the School of Graduate Studies.
How do I find out about scholarships, awards and bursaries?
You can learn more about financial awards through your college or faculty registrar's office. More information can also be obtained from Admissions and Awards, 172 St. George St.
Where can I find a bank machine on campus?
Bank machines are indicated with a dollar sign ($) on the printable version of the St. George campus map. If you are close to the edge of campus, note that there are other bank machines at major street corners around campus.
Computers & Email
How do I set up my email?The student’s U of T email will be the primary means by which the University will share important information with them. Students can set up their email at the same time they create a UTORid.
Where can I use a computer?
Public access computers are available in most campus libraries. Students will likely need to log in with their UTORid and password.
What’s a UTORid? How do I get one?
Students need a UTORid to gain access to online services such as library computers, University email and the U of T Portal (Blackboard). To get a UTORid, create an email account and set up a personal web space, students can register at the UTORid website using the library and student numbers on their TCard as identification. Computer and email related support is available at the Information Commons Help Desk on the main floor of Robarts Library, 130 St. George St.
What is the U of T Portal? What is Blackboard?
The U of T Portal, also referred to as Blackboard, is an online tool used by professors and students to share information, post assignments and articles, post marks, and communicate with each other. Professors usually indicate whether or not they have Blackboard content during your first lecture.
Food & Meal Plans
What is there to eat on campus?There are dozens of places to eat on campus, highlighted by the food map.
Where do I sign up for a meal plan?
The St. George Campus Dining Plans allow students to dine at residence dining halls across campus, and use flexible dollars to purchase snacks at any of the 30 retail locations on campus. These plans, along with the Flexible Plans (perfect for off-campus students) and New College Plans, are available for purchase online from UeaT.
Where can I microwave my food?
The food map highlights all of the microwaves are on campus. Students can microwave their food at: Sid's Café in Sidney Smith Hall, the New College Commuter's Lounge (basement level in Wilson), Wilson Lounge at New College, Innis Café, the Robarts Library Café on the 2nd floor, Understudy Café at Gerstein Library, The Buttery at Trinity, the Junior Common Room in University College, Wymilwood Café at Victoria College, Medical Sciences Building Café, Engineering Café (Hard Hat Café) in Sanford Fleming Building, Sammy’s Student Exchange (Arbor Room) in Hart House, and Café Reznikoff in Morrison Hall.
