Eligibility

The exchange program is open to students nominated from our partner institutions who meet the English language requirements, as well as other criteria depending on faculty and program. Students must be in good academic standing to be nominated for exchange.

If your home university is not one of our partners, you will not be eligible for exchange. However, there are a few other visiting opportunities that may allow you to study at U of T for a short duration of time.

Language requirements

PLEASE NOTE: This information applies to exchange students only. If you are applying to University of Toronto as a degree-seeking student, please see the Enrolment Services website (for undergraduate admissions) or the School of Graduate Studies website (for graduate admissions). 

The official language of instruction at the University of Toronto is English. If your first language is not English, or if your home institution does not teach in English, you will be required to submit English language test results. The University of Toronto will only accept English test scores from TOEFL Internet-based Test (IBT) and IELTS. We do not accept TOEFL "Institutional Testing Program" (ITP) scores or any other English proficiency tests or examinations for exchange.

Test scores must be valid at the time of the University of Toronto’s exchange application deadline (see below for deadline information). TOEFL and IELTS test scores are valid for two years from the date the test was taken. Example: If you are applying for undergraduate exchange for the September 2018 or January 2019 academic terms, you must have a valid test score from April 1, 2016 or later as the application deadline is April 1, 2018.

 

Exemptions

You may qualify for an exemption from submitting a TOEFL or IELTS test score for your exchange application if one of the following applies to you:

  • Your first language is English or if you are a native speaker of English
  • You have completed/are completing four or more years of full-time study in an English language school located in a country where the dominant language is English

Minimum English language requirements for studies in the following faculties:

All faculties except Applied Science and Engineering, Law, and Graduate Studies.

  • TOEFL Internet-based Test (IBT): minimum 89 overall +19 on the writing section.
  • The minimum IELTS academic score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.

Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering

  • TOEFL Internet-based Test (IBT): minimum 89 overall +22 on the writing section.
  • The minimum IELTS academic score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.

Faculty of Law

  • TOEFL Internet-based Test (IBT): minimum 100 overall +25 on the reading and writing sections.
  • The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 7.0, with no band below 6.5.

Graduate-level studies (Masters and PhD)

  • TOEFL Internet-based Test (IBT): minimum 93 overall +22 on the writing/speaking section.
  • The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 7.0 with no band below 6.5.

Nomination

PLEASE NOTE: You and your home institution will select the U of T campus and faculty for your exchange. This information is passed to us by your home institution for our approval. It is very important to select the appropriate faculty and campus when applying/being nominated as this cannot be changed later.  

Application

Once nominated, students are required to apply for exchange via our online student application portal.

The online application opens on the 5th of January each year for the upcoming academic year (September – April).  If you have been nominated by your home institution, apply for exchange through our Student Portal

PLEASE NOTE: We only have one nomination & application period for the full upcoming academic year (fall & winter semesters). In most cases, the new schedule of course offerings for your desired Academic Faculty will not be published by the exchange application deadline. When you are applying for an exchange, you will be asked to select a few courses based on the current year’s calendar and timetable. We use this information only to ensure you have been nominated to the most appropriate faculty. You will receive instructions on how to request your actual U of T courses in late May/early June.  

Required documents

Your application will not be processed until all of the required partner and student documents for your application are uploaded by the deadline. Please follow the instructions carefully to ensure that you have submitted all of the required documents according to the faculty to which you are applying. Your home institution is instructed to upload your official academic transcript on your behalf, as well as TOEFL/IELTS scores (if required), letters of reference (if applicable), and any other official university documents (if applicable).

  • Graduate-level studies Fall, Full Year and Winter applications including OISE and Law exchange applicants
    • All graduate students must be nominated to the School of Graduate Studies

April 1: Undergraduate Studies

Partners and students’ online nominations and completed Fall, Full Year and Winter exchange applications deadline for undergraduate-level exchange studies for the following faculties:

  • University of Toronto: St. George campus
    • Faculty of Arts and Science (including Rotman Commerce) at St. George campus
    • Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering
    • John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design
    • Kinesiology and Physical Education
    • Music
  • University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) campus
  • University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) campus including the International Research Opportunity Program (iROP)
