Residence application FAQs

General

1. Is there a deadline to receive a residence offer?
Although most offers for September are made in May or June, there is no deadline to receive a residence offer. Residences continue making offers far into the academic year (until March) if spaces become available.

2. What is the June 1 deadline for?

First-year undergraduate students with the Residence Guarantee must receive and accept their offer of admission from the University by June 1 to maintain their Guarantee.

3. Will I receive multiple residence offers if I am covered by the first-year Residence Guarantee?

The first-year Residence Guarantee ensures each covered student receives one residence offer per program.

To qualify for any of the other residences on campus, you must formally decline your current offer. Then you must return to MyRes, confirm your interest in the waitlist (as a non-guaranteed student), and re-rank and save your residence preferences. If required, you should also complete any supplementary StarPortal applications.

If you decline your first residence offer, you are not guaranteed to receive another offer.

4. Why haven’t I heard back from any of the residences? When will I hear back?

Residences will only contact you if they can send you an offer.

Since the number of non-guaranteed residence waitlist applicants exceeds the number of available residence spaces, many of those who apply will not be contacted.

5. I just received a residence offer from a residence I don’t want to live in. Can I transfer residences?

While we try to send students offers to their first or second residence choices, this is not always possible.

Residences will not send you offers while you have a current offer pending. To qualify for any of the other residences on campus, you must formally decline your current offer. Then you must return to MyRes, confirm your interest in the waitlist (as a non-guaranteed student), and re-rank and save your residence preferences. If required, you should also complete any supplementary StarPortal applications.

Before declining your offer, you should first contact your desired residence to see if you are eligible for a space there and if they have any vacancies.

6. Where am I on the residence waitlist?

Each residence waitlist is different and does not necessarily operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Each residence office is completely responsible for determining whom they prioritize and whom they send offers to. You should contact the residence you've applied to directly to inquire about your waitlist status.

Around mid-July, Graduate House posts their waitlist online, which you may view at any time. To confirm your status on the Student Family Housing waitlist, please contact them directly.

7. If I accept a residence offer made after the academic year begins, how much will I be charged?

Your residence's office will determine how much you will be charged if you are sent a residence offer after the official move-in date. This amount will be pro-rated based on your move-in date. Contact your residence's office for more information.

8. What should I do if I have a disability-related residence requirement?

Contact your Accessibility Services office as early as possible to provide medical documentation from your health care provider:

Once Accessibility Services has reviewed your documentation, they will work with Housing Services to determine if/what appropriate accommodation in residence is available.

Exchange students

1. I will be an exchange student. Am I guaranteed to receive a residence offer?

Exchange students are not guaranteed to receive residence offers. However, you are welcome to apply to the residence waitlist.

2. I will be coming to the University for a one-term exchange. Can I still apply for residence?

While most residences prioritize applicants planning on staying for the full academic year, part-year students are welcome to apply to the residence waitlist.

To apply, log in to MyRes to confirm your interest in residence and to rank and save your residence preferences. Then, complete the relevant StarPortal applications. If a residence does not have a StarPortal application for part-year stays, complete their application for the full-year. If there is space to do so within the residence's application, note the term that you will require residence for.

If you are applying for the Winter term only, you may also wish to email your desired residence(s) in late October or early November to express your interest in a January move-in.

3. If I accept a residence offer for only one term, will I be charged for a full-year stay?

If you accept a residence offer for only one term, your residence's office will inform you of how much you will be charged for. You will not be charged for a full-year (the rate will be pro-rated.)

MyRes

myres.utoronto.ca

1. Why can’t I see all of the residences on my MyRes rankings page?

Some students are not eligible to live at certain residences. For example, Woodsworth College does not house Engineering students and Innis College does not house Music students. Similarly, Woodsworth and Innis Colleges do not house graduate students.

Also, if you are a first-year Arts & Science student covered by the Residence Guarantee, you will only be eligible to live in those residences affiliated with your college. For example, Guaranteed Innis College students can only rank the Innis Residence and Chestnut Residence, and Guaranteed St. Michael's College students can only rank the St. Michael's Residence and Chestnut Residence.

2. My MyRes rankings page is greyed out and says that my application is "Under Review" or "Pending." What does this mean? Can I make changes to my rankings?

If your MyRes status is "Under Review" or "Pending," a residence is currently considering your application. If your status remains "Under Review" or "Pending" for more than 2 weeks, you may email residence@utoronto.ca to check in.

You cannot change your MyRes residence rankings when your MyRes status is set to "Under Review" or "Pending."

3. Will changing my residence rankings affect my application/waitlist status?

You may change your residence rankings whenever and however many times you wish, so long as your MyRes rankings page permits you to do so. MyRes will not permit you to change your residence rankings if your status is "Under Review."

StarPortal

starportal.utoronto.ca

1. What is the StarPortal for? Do I need to complete the StarPortal applications to be considered for residence?

Some of the residences require applicants to complete supplementary applications – these supplementary applications are the applications on the StarPortal.

You only need to complete the StarPortal applications for the residences that are explicitly noted on your MyRes residence rankings page.

2. What do the StarPortal term dates abbreviations/abridgements mean?
89 Chestnut: Chestnut Residence
Innis: Innis College Residence
New: New College Residences
SMC: St. Michael’s College Residences
UC: University College Residences
Victoria: Victoria University Residences
Woodsworth: Woodsworth College Residence
UTM: University of Toronto Mississauga Residences
UTSC: University of Toronto Scarborough Residences

3. I am a St. George campus student, but the Mississauga and Scarborough campuses’ StarPortal applications are available to me. Can I apply for these residences?

Unless you are applying to Family Housing, please do not complete any UTM or UTSC applications if you are a St. George campus student. If you are a St. George campus student, you are only eligible to live at the St. George residences.

Likewise, if you are a Mississauga or Scarborough campus student, you are only eligible to live at the Mississauga or Scarborough residences.

4. I am an undergraduate student, but Graduate House’s StarPortal application is available to me. Can I apply for this residence?

Please do not complete Graduate House’s application. As an undergraduate student, you are not eligible to live at Graduate House.

5. Why does my StarPortal application say “Not Complete” even though I’ve completed every section of the application?

Some of the residences block certain sections of their applications to those whom they have not sent offers to. If you are sent a residence offer, you will be asked to return to your StarPortal application to complete these sections. Once you complete them, your application status will be changed to “Complete.”

So long as you have completed all of the sections of the application available to you, and have clicked "Save and Continue" on all of these sections, you have successfully submitted your application.

6. I am completing Victoria University’s StarPortal application. Do I have to pay their $600 application fee?

If you would like to be considered for residency at Victoria University, you must pay their $600 application fee. This fee is refundable if they cannot send you a residence offer. However, you would forfeit this fee if you chose to cancel your Victoria application at any time (this includes if you accept an offer from another residence) or decline an offer from Victoria.

Victoria University is the only undergraduate residence on the St. George campus that requires an application fee.

7. I can’t see Trinity College’s residence application on the StarPortal. Am I still able to apply?

Trinity College does not use the StarPortal to host its supplementary application.

If you would like to be considered for residency at Trinity College, rank them first on MyRes. If you are a Trinity College student, click the “Next Steps” button at the bottom of your rankings page to be directed to Trinity College’s supplementary application. If you are not a Trinity College student, you will not be able to access Trinity College’s supplementary application – you will only be granted access if they send you a residence offer.

8. I can’t see Loretto College’s residence application on the StarPortal. Am I still able to apply?

Loretto College does not use the StarPortal to host its supplementary application. Completing St. Michael's College's StarPortal application does not mean that you have applied to Loretto.

If you would like to be considered for residency at Loretto College, rank them first on MyRes and then email loretto.college@utoronto.ca to express your interest.

9. I am completing Graduate House's StarPortal application. Do I have to pay their $100 application fee?

Yes. If you would like to be considered for residency at Graduate House, you must pay their $100 application fee.
