2. Create your profile
There are four basic steps to create your profile:
1. Create your profile by automatically retrieving your information from ROSI/ACORN. Update the information on the application as necessary, and make sure to enter an alternate email address.
2. List any universities or colleges you have attended other than U of T, including any previous degrees or diplomas, the Explore or other transfer credits obtained, but not including A-levels, IB or CEGEP.
3. Upload a photo of yourself in one of the designated formats (jpg, jpeg or gif).
4. Enter your emergency contact information. This is not required but useful to have. We will not contact your emergency contact without your written permission.
3. Complete application
To complete your application, you need to follow these six steps:
1. Select your destination – You are required to select both a first and second choice for your Student Exchange program or host university.
2. Create a separate application for each exchange – If you plan to apply for two different exchanges during different semesters, you should create two separate applications.
3. List your proposed courses – You must submit a proposed list of host university courses on the application form. These courses give us an idea of which faculty at the host institution you should be considered for. You will select your final courses directly with the partner institution after you are admitted.
4. Choose your term – When selecting the "term", pick the U of T term for which you will be away (e.g., Semester 1 in Australia = Winter; Winter semester in Germany = Fall; Semester 1 and 2 in Argentina = Full Calendar Year).
5. Select your subject POSt – In the Program field, if you are enrolled in more than one Subject POSt, choose the one that you hope to complete the majority of your abroad courses towards at your first-choice institution.
6. Upload documents – Upload all required documents:
- Questionnaire Form
- CIE Funding Application Form (optional)
- SGS Graduate Approval Form (Graduate students only)
- Combined Program Student Approval Form (Law students in combined program only)
- Interim Grade Report – required only for first-year students who have grades for less than 4.0 credits and are enrolled in Y-credit courses or any student factoring in-progress Y-courses into their CGPA to meet requirements.
4. Next steps
Once you have applied, the steps toward confirmation are typically as follows:
- Faculty Approval - All undergraduate students will require approval to participate from their faculty. CIE will contact your faculty to obtain permission. Graduate students will submit approval with the SGS Graduate Approval Form as part of the application.
- Review of application – The decision to nominate a student for a given program is based on a careful review of the entire application package, including faculty approval, academic record, questionnaire, resumé and potentially an interview. Students will be ranked according to the seriousness of their interest, as well as their personal and academic fit with the program they have chosen. Applicants who are not selected for their first destination of choice will be automatically considered for their secondary destination. Details of the decision process, including student rankings and reasons for these rankings, are confidential and will not be disclosed to any applicant.
- Conditional nomination - You will receive an email from CIE notifying you if you have been conditionally nominated for the exchange program and whether this will be for your first choice institution. You can also check the status of your application online.
- Host institution application – You will need to apply for admission with the host institution after your conditional nomination. You will receive a checklist outlining the application requirements of the host institution.
- Placement confirmation – Placement at the host institution is confirmed once you receive an admissions letter from the partner institution. Congratulations, you’re going on exchange!
- Release of bursary funds – If applicable, bursary funds will only be released when CIE receives official confirmation of admission at the partner institution. You must notify the CIE when you receive an official admissions offer.
5. Before you leave
Before you leave to participate in a CIE program, you will be required to complete the following final steps. You can complete these requirements as soon as you receive your conditional nomination letter.
- Attend a Safety Abroad Workshop
- Attend a Transfer Credit Session (for Faculty of Arts and Science and UTM undergraduate students only)
- Register on the Safety Abroad Database
- Return Terms of Participation, Consent and Release from Liability Forms (in Documents box at right)
- Return Permission to Release Information Form (optional) (in Documents box at right)
2018-19 Programs Deadlines
Summer Research Exchange Programs: SREP (except Engineering-Science)
- Deadline for Application: December 3, 2017
- Nomination Decision Deadline: depending on destination (early January to late February)
Language and/or Coursework Summer Programs
Application deadlines for Summer Exchanges are different depending on the program:
- Deadline for Summer Exchanges - Round 1: January 14, 2018
- Nomination Decision Date - Round 1: February 28, 2018 (or earlier)
- Deadline for Summer Exchanges - Round 2: March 11, 2018
- Nomination Decision Date - Round 2: April 10, 2018 (or earlier)

2018-2019 Fall, Winter & Full Year Program Deadlines
- Fall/Winter/Full Year Deadline: January 14, 2018 (Passed)
- Winter Programs Deadline (select programs): June 3, 2018

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)
DAAD graduate scholarship:
For internal review, submit a copy of your DAAD application to CIE, Room 209 33 St George St. Your application for the internal review committee must include:
- 1 set of paper copies of your application summary which is generated from the DAAD online portal.
- 1 signed reference in a sealed envelope for internal review.
Deadline extended: October 20, 2017 for Graduate Scholarship (Study Scholarship and Research Grants)
- Graduate Scholarship (Study Scholarship and Research Grants)
- Only applicants for 7-12 months will be considered for Graduate Scholarship nomination.
- Nomination Decision Date: October 28, 2017
For Undergraduate applications apply directly to DAAD. The application portal will open on December 1st, 2017. All applications for the academic year 2018/19 must be submitted by January 31, 2018. Please note the application portal closes at 11:59 Central European Time (CET).
Amgen Scholars Program
Designed to inspire the scientists of tomorrow, the Amgen Scholars program provides undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in a compelling, 10-week, scientific research experience at a world-leading university in Japan over the summer.
The application period for the program is now open for Summer 2018, with an application deadline of February 1, 2018.

All institutions (including Self-Designed Programs)
- Deadline for Application: January 14, 2018
- Nomination Decision Date: February 28, 2018 (or earlier)
- Deadline for Application – Round 2 (only for select schools in the winter term): June 3, 2018
- Nomination Decision Date: June 26, 2018
To participate in any CIE exchange program, you must upload the Questionnaire Form as part of your online application. In the Questionnaire, you may be asked about the following:
- How studying at the institution will complement your U of T academic program: consider course offerings and their pertinence to your program, the study environment, etc.
- How study at the institution may help you with your post-U of T endeavours
- Any key skills and experiences that would enhance your likelihood of success as an exchange student or researcher abroad.
- Summer research applicants may be asked about their research interests and experience and include information about their prospective supervisors or projects at the host institution, if available.
Your statement of interest should be carefully checked for spelling and grammatical errors. It will be read by the selection committee at the CIE.
For Exchange, Research Abroad and Joint Minor programs, you are required to upload a resumé as part of your online application. Your resumé should be no longer than 2 pages, or no more than 3 pages if you are a graduate student
Your academic and work history are important, but we want to hear about your other experiences as well. Try to include some information showing that you are well rounded, mature and capable of living away from home for an extended period of time. This might include volunteer positions, language proficiency, hobbies, scholarships, as well as any previous international experiences you have had, including their duration.
