Residence Life Staff Training

Residence dons and residence assistants play a critical role in the development of vibrant and supportive residence communities across the St. George campus. The Office of Student Life - in collaboration with staff from the each of the divisional residences - provides a series of training workshops and a portal community designed to ensure that Residence Life staff are fully prepared for their roles.

Pre-Service Training

For four days in August, 170 residence dons and residence assistants from across the St. George campus come together for intensive training in the foundations of working in residence life. Many of the residences provide additional training on divisional-specific topics in the days before and after central training.

In-Service Training

Throughout the year the Residence Life Staff Training Steering Committee provides additional training for residence dons and residence assistants. These workshops are designed to promote the personal and professional growth and development of Residence Life Staff.

Portal Community

In 2008, the Office of Student Life, in collaboration with the Residence Life Functional Group of the Student Life Professionals Network, developed an online portal community for Residence Life Staff. Through the Residence Life Portal Community, residence dons and residence assistants can access resources on a wide variety of topics, share programming ideas, and engage in discussion with residence life staff from across the campus.
