The Centre for International Experience offers a variety of services and supports centrally, which are available to various units by request. This change was made to accommodate increased needs in advising, especially in the immigration space to address changes in policy from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

  • Each faculty and college are assigned an international student immigration advisor that assists staff and faculty members with any inquiries from students.
  • Appointments with immigration advisors are usually conducted virtually in a 1:1 setting and could be offered in person if needed based on availability.
  • There are also weekly drop-in sessions offered to accommodate increased demand for immigration advising.
  • Lastly, modules are available online for frequently asked questions for students, faculty, and staff.

The International Student Services (ISS) team, Learning and Safety Abroad (LSA) team, and the International Student Experience and Global Fluency (ISEGF) team all offer custom programming through workshops by request year-round to support on-location partners. This could also include support for resource fairs, tabling, etc. for any staff or faculty needs to best support incoming international students, support students who are taking part in global learning experiences, as well as ensure that opportunities within the CIE for students are well-showcased. Workshop areas include the following:

  • Immigration
  • International Student Experience (ISE) and support
  • Learning Abroad
  • Overview of the Centre for International Experience (CIE)
  • Safety Abroad
  • University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)
  • and customized options as requested

Through our partnership with each college, faculty, or department, we can offer support what reflects the demands of students’ specific academic environment.

On Location Health & Wellness Counsellor – This role is dedicated to supporting the mental health needs of students through both virtual and in-person scheduled appointments. The on-location counsellor provides one-on-one counselling support and facilitates workshops that address relevant student mental health concerns. They collaborate with their site’s partners as a resource for consultations and referrals, helping to foster a holistic and supportive educational environment.

  • The On Location (OL) counselling service is a lower intensity, early intervention service, within the Health and Wellness (H&W) Stepped Care model. Students affiliated with the On Location site can either self-refer or be referred by OL partners (e.g., registrars, residence life coordinators, deans) and H&W staff.
  • The first appointment typically is a single-session, One-at-a-Time (OAAT) appointment, where a top-of-mind concern is addressed and a wellness plan and next steps are determined, including the option of a brief course of counselling on-location and/or other H&W services available at the central clinic. OAATs are an often popular choice by students, providing a more flexible, low-barrier approach to counselling.
  • Brief therapy is available for students experiencing mild to moderately severe mental health and psychosocial concerns, who would benefit from time-limited support.
  • OAATs and brief counselling are framed within a strengths-based, trauma-informed, and skills-based approach.
  • H&W On Location and Health Promotions staff facilitate orientation sessions in August, September, and October. Orientation sessions, as well as psychoeducational workshops and mental health literacy training (e.g., Identify, Assist, and Refer; IAR), can be arranged through the OL Counselling Leads and/or our Health Promotions team on request.
How to Access Services:

Students may self-refer to On Location Counselling services by calling 416-978-8030 (select option “5”) and asking for their faculty/department Wellness Counsellor with which they are involved (e.g., “New College counsellor”). Students may be referred by Deans or Registrars, or members of their teams, who may send a referral to H&W for the initial session.

OAATs may be booked same-day or within a few days.  Services are offered in hybrid format, both in-person or virtually.
